Fencing HIGH STANDARD AT NATIONAL TITLES

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, October 22. Some of the best fencing seen in New Zealand for many years was displayed in the finals of the epee and the women’s foil events at the national fencing championships at Dunedin at the week-end. K. Mann (Wellington), who retained his national epee title, and the runner-up, T. Bell (Wellington), gave outstanding performances and the deciding bout between these t-wo fencers, who had not had a loss at that stage, was one of the features of the tournament. All eight finalists in the women’s individual foil event were strong fencers. The winner was Miss D. Coleman (Auckland), with one toss and only 13 of a possible 35 hits scored against her. Miss P. Satterthwaite (Auckland) was second and Mrs M. Binning (Wellington), third. As this was only her third season of fencing and the nationals her first major championship. Miss Satterthwaite’s second place was a remarkable achievement. Technically, Miss Satrterthwaite had few rivals and the necessary tactical experience of another two seasons should firmly establish her among the country’s top fencers. New Zealand’s Olympic fencing representative, B. Pickworth (Auckland) regained his foil title, with no losses. M. Henderson, also of Auckland, performed creditably to take second position with one loss. K. Mann, with three losses, was third. In the team events Auckland won both men’s and women’s foil sections and epee. Second place in the men’s foil was taken by the Otago-Southland team with Canterbury third, and in the women’s contest Wellington was second and Canterbury again third.
