ATHLETICS Canterbury 10-Mile Road Race Won By A. Potts

A viaiting athelte, A. Potts, of Otago, won the Canterbury 10-mile road race championship in the record time of 50mm 48sec on Saturday. The race, held in conjunction with* the inter-club athletic meeting at Rugby Park, had a field of 14 starters over a two-la<p course, and Potts, the favourite, won by 18sec from R. Stevens, of University; who also beat the pre[Vious best time of 52min, [held by J. K. Macdonald. As Stevens was the first Canterbury runner home he will hold the 'provincial record and title. It was a strong field and at the three-and-a-half-mile mark Potts, Stevens, C. Reece, T. Preece. A. Bayard (junior), C. Woods and A. Buckley were fairly qlosely bunched. Then Potts and Stevens made a break and drew away from the rest with Bayard in third place.

After five miles Potts and Stevens were on their own and Preece, in third place, was 100 yards behind, but trying to close the gap. At the eight-mile mark Potts was four yards in front of Stevens, but three-quarters of a mile from home he gradually pulled away, running very strongly. Bayard, still a junior, ran a particularly fine race and his time of 52min 34sec, for fifth place, won him an A grade standard. The most interesting track events were the senior sprints where D. Mackenzie (University) and D. Minards (Technical), who provided

:such good fare last week, contested the 100 yards and 220 yards. Last Saturday, Minards, a greatly improved runner, beat Mackenzie in two races, but this time Mackenzie turned the tables, winning the 100 yards in 10.4 sec, with Minards .Isee behind, and the 220 yards in 22.45ec, with Minards a good three yards behind. Mackenzie was very fast off the blocks and his initial speed gave him an advantage which Minards found too difficult to overcome. Minards’ best effort was in the last leg of the four by 220 yards relay in which he was timed at 22.25ec. In this leg Minards took the baton a yard behind D. Davison, of University. Davison ran with great determination and Minards only got his nose in front at the tape, to win. Both teams were given the same time of Imin 33.25ec. G’. Hack’s time of 2min s.ssec for the senior 880 yards was perhaps his slowest for several years, but he held himself in check for most of the race to pace Miss M. Chamberlain, who was running with the men. Hack left his effort until the last moment and there is little doubt that he helped Miss Chamberlain to record a very good 2min 13.5 sec. which was perhaps her best early-season effort. Miss L. Anderson, who beat Miss Chamberlain in the 100 yards last week, again headed off her rival In the 75 yards on Saturday in B.9sec, with Miss Chamberlain a yard behind. Miss Anderson also won the long jump, but her distance of 17ft 2|in was average only and will undoubtedly be improved upon. The women's shot put was won by Mrs V. Young with a distance of 49ft 2in. but it was Miss L. Duncan's second-place effort of 44ft 9jin, which drew attention. Miss Duncan lacks the height and physique of her formidable opponent and her distance was a very creditable effort indeed. Abbreviations used in the results are:— University (U.). Marist (M.). Snell’s 4min 13sec On Gravel Track (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 22. After a 10-mile training run in the morning, P. G. Snell secured a narrow but convincing win over W. D. Baillie in a mile race at the Western Springs Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was the highlight of the Point Chevalier centenary celebrations. Snell’s time was 4min 13sec on a rough, gravel track—a good one considering the track and the earliness of tile season. Snell also beat M. G. Halberg and A. B. Magee, as well as five handicap runners who were given up to 40yds start.
