TWO ROAD DEATHS
Week-End Report (NX. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 22. A car smash near Greymouth this morning took the Labour week-end road toll to two. Last year three died on New Zealand roads on the first two days of the holiday week-end. A woman was killed when two cars collided at 11,20 a.m. today on the coast road 12 miles north of Greymouth. Four people were injured, three seriously. A man was killed in Auckland last evening when his motor-cycle collided with a power pole. Five people hurt in road accidents so far this week-end are in a critical condition. A Transport Department spokesman said tonight that the traffic had been exceptionally heavy. It was thought that today, the last day of the long. week-end, would bring peak traffic. The Transport Department appeals to drivers to leave early on their return trips. Though most traffic behaviour had been good, traffic officers had observed two dangerous driving faults —failing to keep to the left and faulty overtaking. Some reports had mentioned the danger created by slow drivers who had failed to pull over and allow faster traffic to pass.
