Quite Able Picked For First Leg At Rangiora

Quite Able will continue his New Zealand Cup preparation in the North Canterbury Handicap, the principal event and first leg of the double, on the second day of the North Canterbury Racing Club’s annual meeting at Rangiora on Monday. One of his best runs should be adequate *lo give him victory although he will be conceding weight all round.

Quite Able has 9-1, 31b nacre than he carried into second place behind Personify in the corresipondins race yesterday. The latter will not be one of his rivals on Monday. The only horse rated within a stone of Quite Able in the North Canterbury Handicap is Valaris. whose Labour Day campaign will probably be determined by his oerformance in the Watkins Handican at Trentham today. Ten furlongs is probably Valaris's best distance and although he will find Quite Able difficult to match with only ll'b difference in their weights, he should prove the best of the top-weight’s rivals. Matauwhi and Golden Howe may be the best supported light-weights. Matauwhi was the best behind Quite Able in the President’s Handicap yesterday. Golden Howe is a newcomer to the meeting. His last-start failure in the Claude Stock Memorial at Orari a week ago is the only bleak spot in his otherwise very consistent record this season.

Abou Ben Adhem will take beating in the second leg of the double, the Dr. T. A Will Memorial Handicap, if he has held the form which gave him an easy first-up win for the season in the open sprint at Orari last Saturday. Hopeful, which won the open snrint yesterday stylishly. Gabelle, which led the chase after him at the finish, and Safe Harbour, a fastfinishing fourth in the same race, are generally exnected to be Abou Ben Adhem’s strongest rivals.
