Cream
Sir,—Can you tell me what the number on the cap of a bottle of cream is supposed to signify? For the last three days my cream has had “5” stamped on it. I have been wondering how fresh the cream is, but have ruled out the possibility of the 5 signifying the fifth day of the week or the fifth day of the month. This cream was bought at a corner store, not through the milk delivery.— Yours, etc, CURIOUS. September 13, 1961. [The supervising officer of the Christchurch. Metropolitant Milk Board (Mir A. P. Milithorpe) said: “The practice of numbering the cap of a bottle of cream is not required at present by law, but is done by the treatment stations solely for their own convenience and all queries referring to this should be made to the company concerned. However, if the correspondent feels that he is being supplied with stale cream and would supply this office with further details, the board would be happy to investigate the allegation.”J [The general manager of the Christchurch Milk Company (Mir N. H. S. McCann) said: “In the case of aluminium seal bottles, the number should have corresponded to the delivery day of the month—9 for ninth, 10 for tenth, 11 for eleventh, etc. In the case of disc-mouth bottles, No. 5 was for delivery on Sunday, September 10. and other numbers between 1 and 7 should have applied to the succeeding days. Vendors are permitted to return to the company daily any surplus cream supplies. It would, therefore, appear that the cream received by the correspondent had been kept over from Sunday’s delivery.”!
