China
Sir, —It would be quite ridiculous to discount the tremendous progress made in China since the advent of Communism. Anything would be an improvement on the soulless extortion practised by the rampaging war lords. However, “PJ.A.” and Ralph S. Wheeler don’t seem to realise that many people prefer to select their own existence. These unenlightened types also delight in castigating their political leaders. As an example, I could never develop any real affection tor Mr Nordmeyer. In fact I would banish him to the North Island, preferably to the wilds of Pahiatua, where, as everybody knows, there are some very rugged types indeed. Now Mao seems to be allergic to any form of criticism and has been very tough on those who have ventured it. (Notice the past tense.) China for the Chinese, and leave me and mine to our capitalist squalor and servitude.—Yours, etc, R.N.W. October 10, 1961.
