Birth Defects
Sir.—Every young woman should be made aware, by education, of the risks now known to accompany ignorance of requirements for perfect babies. There would be fewer afflicted children in institutions in New Zealand, fewer helpless dependent in. fants in the care of those willing and able to feed, clothe, teach and love them while they suffer longer or shorter lives apart from thenmothers or other relatives. With English and American information most recently disclosed, there would seem no reason for withholding all available information about the causes of birth defects and how to avoid them. The August magazine has a most enlightening article on the subject.— Yours, etc, FOR PROTECTION. October 12, 1961.
