Price Of Lambs

Sir, —I wonder how many more costs can be loaded on to meat producers. I have just received my return for 63 lambs shipped and sold in England on my own account at Smithfield Market. The 63 lambs, weighing 20201 b, realised £l5l 18s lOd at Smithfield Market Freight, general charges, and local killing and freezing charges amounted in all to £77 15s Bd, so that I actually received for my 63 lambs the sum of £73 3s 2d. The gross price of £l5l 18s lOd is bad enough, but I realise that our lambs must meet the world market. However, do farmers realise that it is now costing them over 100 per cent, of the prices they receive, for lambs to be killed and sent to England, and that for every 20s paid for his lamb in England the farmer gets less than 10s here? Exhortations to farmers to keep costs down are becoming nonsense.—Yours, etc., CORRIEDALE. October 11, 1961,
