ATHLETICS Junior Record Broken At Christ’s College Sports

Snatching victory in the last 50 yards, E. Pearson fought off a determined challenge by A Scott to win the junior 880 yards in record time at the first day of the Christ's College athletic sports at the college grounds yesterday afternoon. PearSon’s time of 2min 14sec broke P. J. H. Hewlett’s record established in 1957 by .6 sec.

The sports were held in a slight easterly wind on a slow, well-grassed track. According to an official there is an uphill gradient of about sft between the start and finish of the 100 yards and a difference of about 2ft in the long jump approach. Considerable interest centred on the senior long jump. In training P. Black had threatened the figure of 21ft Bin put un by F. G. Westenra in 1877 and since equalled by D. B. Ford in 1957. Black failed to better the record in the competition and after a best jump of 20ft 7in made three special attempts to improve the record but failed by IJin. The secondary schools’ champion. Black had a comfortable win in the 220 yards. His brother, R. Black, might very well have broken R. V. Nicoll’s 1946 record of 53.65ec for the intermediate 440 yards had he not been forced to make his own pace. His time of 53.95ec was splendid on the slow track. Black also proved to be an accomplished and relaxed high jumper, winning the intermediate event with sft Jin,

Content to leave the pacemaking to others, R. Lewis won the senior 880 yards handsomely. With 220 yards to go M. Crotian made a move but at the top of the straight Lewis passed him to win in 2min 4.lsec. Results were:— Senior 220 Yards (record, 22 8 D. W. McKenzie. 1959).—P. Black 1, R. Cordery 2, W. Scales 3.
