Magistrate's Court Drove At 70 m.p.h. Over Compulsory Stop

Although Kenneth William Hanaon, aged 29. »’u at present serving a gaol term in Paparua prison, he should not escape the consequences of di* dangerous driving behaviour on July 10, said Mr E. S J Crutchley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday Hanson faced four charges, which fines and costs of £3l were imposed, arising Irons his travelling over a compulsory stop intersection about 70 miles an hour. Read said that Hanson was seen by an independent witness to drive his vehicle along Buchanans road at an estimated 70 miles an hour, and to cross over the intersection of Carmen road, through stop signs, without slackening speed Further along, Hanson stopped and after repairing something on his car turned round and returned the way he had come He again ignored the compulsory stop, and this time collided with a van travelling along Carmen road. The van driver suffered head and back injuries, and both vehicles were extensively damaged. Sergeant Read said OBSCENE LANGUAGE For using obscene language in Cathedral square on October 5, Graeme Charles Talbot, aged 19. a window cleaner, was fined £lO. REMANDED Noel James Quirke, aged 20 (Mr G. R. Lascelles) was remanded in custody to October 9 on a charge of breaking and entering the post office at Sefton on October 2 with intent to commit a crime.

DRUNK IN CHARGE OF BICYCLE A 62-year-old man who was arrested after he was seen by a constable weaving from side to side of Marlow road on October 5 pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk in charge of a bicycle.

The accused, John Lewis Stalker, a workman, was fined £2 19s.

Townshend said that Stalker was obviously under the influence of liquor when a constable saw him cycling in Pages road Stalker then turned into Marlow road and weaved from side to side of the street before he was stopped and arrested. DANGEROUS SPEED On a charge of driving at a speed which might havt been dangerous at the intersection of Sherborne and Purchas streets on July 14 David John Hooper, aged 22 a driver (Mr D J Hill), was fined £lO. His driving licence was suspended for three months Hooper pleaded not guilty. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge against Neil Henry Harris of proceeding before the way was clear at a stop sign was dismissed 'Before Mr E A. Lee. S.M.) DROVE WITHOUT DUE CARE Sydney Ramsay Connor, a company director (Mr B McClelland), was convicted and ordered to pay costs on a charge of using a motor-car without due care and attention in Cashel street on July 13. The Magistrate said it was not a grave charge in the circumstances. Charges against Connor of failing to stop after an accident and failing to ascertain if any person had been injured were dismissed. “On the evidence I am satisfied the defendant did not know his car had been involved in the accident,” the Magistrate said.
