NEW CUSTOMS TARIFF
JLeetures To Aid Interpretation Anticipating the introduction of the new customs tariffs on July 1, 1962, the Customs Department has arranged preliminary training for its own staff, customs agents and some importers in interpreting the tariff. The Collector of Customs (Mr W. G. Lowrie) said yesterday that because of the numbers to be catered for and to keep classes to a workable size each series of lectures would be repeated. The introductory session, which will deal with the tariff structure, related publi. cations and the relation of the tariff to trade statistics, w'lll be conducted by Mr H. W. Hoy. senior advisory officer of the department’s head office, on October 18. Later sessions to be conducted by trained local staff will concern interpretation of the new tariff and help in handling problems. Mr Lowrie said the training, which would cover some weeks, was intended solely as a basic grounding in the application of the new tariff.
