CUTTING GROOVES IN TYRES

A warning against the practice of cutting fresh grooves In a tyre when the original tread has been worn away was issued in England recently by the Tyre Manufacturers’ Conference. The conference represents all British makers of tyres. It was pointed out that machines for cutting new grooves were sometimes used on some commercial tyres, but that tyres for passenger cars frequently had less than one tenth of an inch of tread rubber between the fabric of the casing and the bottom of the grooves of the original tread. Cutting new grooves could ruin the casing and would make the tyres extremely dangerous to use.
