Disobeyed Constable (N.Z. Press AMOtiotioni AUCKLAND, Oct 5. Peter Alderidge Williams, aged 37. * solicitor practising in Auckland, was fined £2O today for driving a car against the instructions of a police officer. His licence was suspended for three months Mr W. J Meade. S.M.. endorsed Williams's driver's licence for three years. Williams pleaded guilty Mr N. G. Howes, the police prosecutor, said that about 6 pm. on August « a Henderson constable saw Williams drive into a local vineyard. The constable found Williams to be affected bv liquor, but not sufficiently under the influence to warrant being arrested The constable forbade Williams to drive, said Mr Howes. It was agreed to allow a friend of Williams to drive instead. The friend then drove the car away. Three-quarters of a mile from the vineyard the constable found Williams's car o-er a bank. Williams said he was driving at the time of the accident. He added that his brakes had failed at a bend. Mr D. S. Beattie, for Williams. said perhaps it might have been better if the police officer had taken his keys The Magistrate said that possibly the constable, knowing who Williams was. thought he would show a sense of responsibility by accepting the prohibition.
