Charles Satisfied With Association’s Treatment

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON Oct. 5. The New Zealand lefthanded golfer, R. J. Charles, has no complaints about the treatment he has received from the New Zealand Professional Golfers' Association during his probationary period. He made this clear in an interview with the committee before the sponsored £lOOO tournament at Paraparaumu this morning. Charles said recent press statements attributed to him had been misunderstood and as a result could easily mislead the public into thinking that the association had been placing barriers in his way.

He had never intended to put pressure on the association to grant him earlier opportunities to play in the Canada Cup, and there was no suggestion that the terms of his probationary contract had been the sole reason for his return to New Zealand. He had wanted to return to New Zealand about September anyway. He felt the co-operation of the association had made it easier for him to compete overseas and he had every intention of meeting its requirements.

The association had always considered that the form of travelling New Zealand professionals would have to be studied when selections were made for the Canada Cup. Charles said he was aware of this.

Last November. Charles, who represented New Zealand in the world amateur teams' tournament in America, announced that, having turned professional, he intended to spend three months each year in New Zealand.

He intended to compete in South Africa and America and, to facilitate his entry, the association granted him recognition as a probationer on the following conditions: —that he sign a bond agreeing to return to New Zealand

for three months each year to play in 75 per cent, of the home tournaments during that time; that he give the association details of his prospective employment while in New Zealand. Charles is an assistant to the Christchurch professional, N. H. Fuller, who is competing in the Paraparaumu tournament. The three-month term of Charles's contract still applies.
