Hiscox, immediate past grand master of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows and the general secretary of the order. Mr H. F. Watson. ■Die origin of the term oddfellows was unknown, Mr Watson said, but he had his own theory. In the old days men belonged to guilds and trades connected with their work. Those who did not belong to any were left out Hence the term oddfellows
"The title carried with it much historical significance and today we are proud to be called oddfellows.” he said. “There is room for a few more oddfellows in the world today—odd in the sense that they do not rely on everything the welfare state has to offer but make a personal effort and show a spirit of independence.” It was that type of oddfellow. who had built the British nation and Commonwealth, he added. Their visit comes after an invitation by the orders in New Zealand and Australia, made at the conference in England last year. The men will be welcomed by about 1000 members of the Auckland district at Rotorua tomorrow evening.
