“OBSOLETE” CRIMES

Removal From Statutes (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 3. Marching, girls and people who train them might, in theory, be guilty of a crime punishable by seven years' gaol under the existing Crimes Act,» the AttorneyGeneral (Mr Hanan) told the House of Representatives tonight. This is the crime of “unlawful drilling.” It has been dropped from the new Crimes Bill now before the House. It also omits the crimes of pretending to practice witchcraft, challenging to fight a duel, libelling foreign sovereigns, abducting heiresses, and failing to resist pirates. "Members will doubtless be relieved to learn that it will no longer be an offence to write a letter to a pirate," Mr .Hanan commented, reading the bill’s second reading. He said these crimes were obsolete or out of place in a code of serious offences.
