PROFESSIONAL GOLFER
53 Years In The Sport (From Our Own Reporter) NELSON, October 3. Mr L. G. Ross, the first professional golf coach ever brought from the United Kingdom by the New Zealand Golf Council celebrated his sixy-eighth birthday, and 53 years in golf, in Nelson today.
Mr Ross spent his day being greeted by friends and pupils, and reminiscing about three decades of golf in New Zealand, from all points between Auckland and Bluff. "The invitation to come to New Zealand in 1924 by the New Zealand Golf Council i? one that has never given me a pang of regret,” Mr Ross said. “It has been my privilege and good fortune to have met the best sportsmen, and play on almost every course in New Zealand.”
Born in Warwickshire, of Scots parentage, Mr Ross is one of five brothers, all of whom were golf professionals. Three survive today—Mr A Ross, for five years Swiss champion, Mr D. T. Ross, the present professional at the Weiss Golf Club, in the Scottish highlands, and Mr J B Ross, a professional at the Everglades Golf Club, Miami, in the United States. Mr L. G. Ross will defend for the sixth time on October 28 the R.S.A. championship trophy. "I really don’t want to win this time,” he said, "but play I must.”
Pesticide Disposal The Paparua County Council has given the Department of Agriculture permission to bury insecticides at the Maddisons road pit.
