HIGHER WALL ON BORDER
Armoured Car Guard (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BERLIN. October 3 Three East German armoured cars stood by yesterday while East German workers raised the height of the Berlin border wall in the Wedding district of the French' sector, West Berlin police said. Work also began on walling up windows in the fourth floor of border houses in nearby Bernauerstrasse, scene of many spectacular leaps on to the West Berlin pavement in recent weeks. Most of the lower storey windows in this street have already been either waited up or latticed with barbed wire. West German border guards in the Thuringia area reported increased East German activity on strengthening the border barricades between East and West Germany, in. 61uding the erection of a second fence behind the one already lining much of the border. They said they have also seen East German families evacuated from houses within 500 yards of the border. Poland and Czechoslovakia announced yesterday that if the West continued ‘‘to reject a peace treaty with the German States.” they were “firmly resolved” to conclude a peace treaty with East Ger. many before the end of the year.
