INSPECTOR P. C. SMEATON
Gift From Police Social Club A canteen of cutlery was presented to Chief Inspector P. C. Smeaton, who has been appointed in charge of the Timaru police district, by Chief Inspector A. C. J. Rush, on behalf of the Christchurch Police Social Club, yesterday. Chief Inspector Smeaton said in reply that over the years he had enjoyed being a member of the Police Force and that if he had his time over again he would make police work his career. He thanked the club for its presentation.
Earlier in the afternoon the commissioned officers at the Central Police Station made a presentation to Chief Inspector Smeaton. Chief Inspector Smeaton joined the Police Force in 1928 and was stationed in Wellington. In 1932 he was transferred to the Wellington C. 1.8. From 1942 to 1951 he was in charge of the Wellington wharf CXB. and during this period he was promoted to the rank of defec-tive-sergeant
In 1951 he was transferred to New Plymouth and was appointed in charge of the C. 1.8. with the rank of detective senior-sergeant.
The following year he was posted to Christchurch with the commissioned rank of inspector. On August 22 he took up a temporary position in charge of the Timaru district and on September 8 he was promoted to chief inspector.
