Group Flies To Cairo
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright; CAIRO, Oct. 1. The first batch of Egyptian families forced out of Syria since the Syrian rebellion arrived in Cairo last night aboard a special aircraft, the Associated Press reported.
The group of about 55, including children, said a wave of tension was sweeping the Syrian capital of Damascus when they left yesterday afternoon.
They were driven to Lebanon and boarded the aircraft in Beirut.
The Egyptians said demonstrations led by Arab nationalists were staged in Damascus calling for unity and denouncing separatism Some demonstrators clashed with Army and police forces, they said. Egyptian military officers who were in Damascus during the revolt were rounded up and placed in a theatre under guard. Egyptian residents were confined to their homes. Damascus streets were reported filled with tanks and Camel Corps troops. But the Egyptian evacuees added: “Syrian people everywhere greeted us and were extremely friendly."
