JUNE OPIE ROSE

Sales Raise £l2OO

"Ths Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Oct. 1.

Teamwork by three horticulturists, an Englishman, a German and a New Zealander. led to the June Opie rose which this year raised about £l2OO for handicapped people. The New Zealander. Mr Cutler of New Lynn, grew the 1100 roses that raised the money. The German, W. Kordes was responsible for the rose and the Englishman, Mr F. Morse, met Miss Opie while she was in hospital. He persuaded Mr Kordes to name the rose after her. Miss Opie. author of the book "Over My Dead Body” decided to use the rose to raise funds for other handicapped people. She set up a trust board for this purpose.

The 1961 roses, offered in return for donations of £l. were grown free by Mr Cutler. Many people gave more than the £1 asked for and the total collected was about £l2OO. The demand exceeded the supply. It is hoped that there will be 4000 roses available for 1962. They will be ready in June. Mr Cutler said that he hoped to interest other nursery owners in growing some of the roses.

He also hopes to have the type of rose offered changed every two years.
