Call For Priority For Northern Outlet
The construction of the section of the northern outlet motorway from Bealey avenue to Chaneys must be given priority when work begins, says a supplied statement from the president of the Kaiapoi Businessmens' Association (Mr H. O. Hills*. "The construction of the short few miles of motorway from Chaneys to Pineacres—while relieving certain congestion apparent today near the Waimakariri bridge—will serve a very limited purpose for few motorists unless cota-i pleted together with the Christchurch to Chaney’s section “There have been a number of statements in The Pre sc' recently from responsible local bodies that the proposed northern outlet from Christchurch may never S farther than Chaneys’ ano this respect it would appear that many people have not carefully studied the difference between a high-
way and a motorway. “We wholeheartedly agree with Mr K. L. Kelly, secre-tary-general of the Automobile Association of Britain, when he states There is no advantage whatever in carrying traffic on fine motorways between towns then leaving it to find its way through the old terminal labyrinth of
suburban streets.' I am sure all those who have carefully studied motorways and seen how speedily traffic is moved along would agree that it would be a grave mistake not to complete the northern outlet right through to Bealey avenue.
"We trust that the Christchurch City Council and planning authorities will take heed of Mr Kelly's expert advice of the necessity to bring a motorway right to the heart of a city. To ignore this advice would be a great injustice to the’ motorists of Christchurch as well as retarding the progress of the city."
