Australia's hire-purchase debt dropped to £393 million at the end of August. It was the first time since the end' of 1959 that the amount owed by Australians on hire - purchase agreements stood at less than £4OO million. Provisional figures issued today by the Commonwealth Statistician (Mr S. R. Carver) showed that the debt has fallen by more than £5O million since the Federal Government introduced credit restrictions last November. Until then it had risen every year.
