LONDON STOCKS
Brighter Tone Dampened (Special Crspdt N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Sept. 21. The slightly better opening to the new account on the London Stock Exchange at the beginning of the week was quickly dampened by the news of Mr Hammarskjold’s death. No further improvement is expected until the international situation is more clear. The first day of the account showed the highest volume of bargains for nearly six weeks. Once again markets are uncertain and even more quiet. Trading is not without firm spots, but these have usually reflected special factors. Despite these gloomy reports, one big firm of jobbers maintains that taking into account .all the adverse factors the markets as a whole can be considered “satisfactory,” at least as fat as prices are concerned, however disappointing the turnover might be.
