INTER-CHANGES OF JUDGES

Comment By Chief Justice (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 21. The Chief Justice (Sir Harold Barrowclough) said today he would like to give effect more often to the temporary posting of Judges of the Supreme Court to other centres. He said recent temporary postings reflected no change in’ policy. It had been due entirely to circumstances. Recently Mr Justice Turner, of Auckland, sat in the Supreme Court at Christchurch. Mr Justice Richmond, of Christchurch, sat in the Supreme Court at Auckland.

“It is not a new policy," said Sir Harold Barrowclough. “I could say, though, that such inter-changes have been rare. I can recollect only one other case in the last several years. “I think, it is a good policy and I would like to give effect to it more often. Judges do not have many opportunities to meet, now there is a separate court of appeal. “There are financial considerations which prevent this being done more often. Judges have to circulate, of course, to a certain extent, due to matters such as holidays and so on.” The Chief Justice is the sole authority for such arrangements.
