VANDALISM PENALTIES

More Severity Wanted

Support for the Christchurch City Council's request to the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) for more severe penalties for vandalism will be given by the Waimairi County Council, the council decided last evening. Cr. A. A. Adcock said the council was concerned about the senseless destruction of public property and the distribution of glass on beaches. "We wanted to erect amenities at Spencer Park.” he said, “but decided against it because we would have had to protect them with concrete walls and screens.

“Consequently, the public was deprived of useful amenities because of the actions of a small minority. “I think the penalties Tor vandalism should be much more severe, and our support would lend weight to the City Council’s request,” Cr. Adcock’s motion on those lines was carried unanimously.
