Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 21 The abolition of the compulsory residence clause fa the Land Settlement Promotion Act was approved by 37 votes to 29 fa the House of Representatives tonight. The Opposition forced < division during the commit tee stage debate on th amendment bill which aboi ished the clause which wa re-inserted in the act by th Labour Government in 195! Mr C. G. E. Harker (Govt Hawke’s Bay) did not vo in tonight's division. H was One of three Nation; members who crossed th floor of the House to suppor the compulsory resident clause in 1959.

The other two members were Mr J. A. Roy, who retired as member for Clutha last year, and Mr B. V. Cooksley (Govt., Wairarapa) who is at present overseas. The Opposition has strongly opposed the repeal of the compulsory residence clause.
