Student To Visit Australia A New Zealand home science student this year will be offered an opportunity of winning scholarships worth £A34O. The manager of Hills Hoists (N.Z.), Ltd., Mr M. H. Archer, announced that his company had invited the Education Department to nominate its leading home science student for a £A4O scholarship. The recipient would fly to Australia in February to compete against scholarship winners from Australia’s six States for a £A3OO additional scholarship. The New Zealand student would be in Australia a week, during which time she and the Australian girls would travel to Hobart to sit for oral, written and practical examinations in home science subjects set by the Tasmanian Education Department. Mr Archer said the scholarship would be offered to a first-year student in the Diploma in Home Science course at the Otago University. or a first year student of the homecraft teachers’ teaming course. The choice would be left to the New Zealand Director of Education (Mr A. B. Campbell*. Mr Archer said 1961 was the fifth consecutive year his company had made scholarships available to home science students in Australia. This was the first year New Zealand had been invited to participate. “Our company does not make washing machines, stoves, food mixers, sewing machines or other domestic apnliances directly associated with the study of home science, but our board has a genuine desire to see girls take 5 greater interest in home life." said Mr Archer. “We feel that our home science scholarships are helping stimulate a greater interest in home management and nutrition.”
