Co-ordination Of Defence

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Sept. 21. There should be a secretary for defence with overall financial and administrative responsibility for the three services, in the opinion of the Treasury, the Royal Commission on State Services was told today by the deputy-Secretary of the Treasury (Mr A B Taylor). He said this would improve the over-all control and co-ordination in the armed services, and would secure a greater degree of administrative efficiency and economy. ’ The individual services could each have the equivalent of an assistant secretary as civil head, said Mr Taylor.

The secretary for defence would be responsible directly to the Minister of Defence and would co-ordin-ate all service administration both civil and military
