Electronic Pump For Heart Cases
(N.Z. Fiess Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 21. People who reach hospital emergency wards suffering from a fatal form of heart attack may in future be saved by "hooking them” to an electronically controlled pump for a few hours, Harvard University’s associate professor of clinical surgery (Dr. D. E. Harken) said in Auckland today. Dr. Harken said preliminary results from the new pump indicated great possibilities.
By controlling the pump’s cycle so that it functioned in between beats of the patient's heart it was possible to rest the ailing heart and allow it to recover, he said.
