AIRLIFT TO MALAYA
Planning For 40 Flights (IV.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Sept. 21. An Army administrative unit in Auckland is working hard to complete arrangements for the airlift of the Ist Battalion. New Zealand Regiment, to Malaya and the repatriation of the 2nd Battalion.
From November 1, there will be 40 DCB flights in and out of Whenuapai in 40 days Planes will leave Whenuapai and Changi airport. Singapore, on alternate days. Major W. F. Cox, deputyassistant quartermaster-gen-eral at Northern Military District will direct the airlift.
The airlift is a combined Army-Royal New Zealand Air Force operation. The DC6's the troops will travel in belong to the R.N.Z.A.F. Each DC6 will take about 50 soldiers and dependents. The total number of troops, wives and children to be moved is about 2000. Advance groups of the two battalions have already lefl and arrived in New Zealand The administrative team is now arranging to transport the main body of the Ist Battalion from Burnham to Auckland The DCB’s will travel between Auckland and Singapore in 31| hours, including two two-hour refuelling stops at Brisbane and Darwin.
