Women’s Shoes

Sir;—Those responsible for designing women’s shoes are sadists! I have tried unsuccessfully to buy some round-toed shoes with plain court heels in an average fitting. Apart from the fact that present fashions are so hideously ugly I can assure you they are most uncomfortable. The big toe is pushed over at an angle that nature never intended in the goblin-like styles. The undershot heels are the cleverest invention to promote a neatly twisted ankle. Long, pointed, frontal protuberances probably do save a few stubbed toes, but they do necessitate learning to walk in a new way or they will trip one up. The very low cut front induces a clawing action with all five toes so that the foot, doesn’t part company with the shoe; quite an achievement when walking solely on the ball of the foot. New Zealand manufacturers, please give us some elegant styles like our Queen wears.—Yours, etc., RUINED FEET. September 19, 1961.
