Russian Nuclear Teste
Sir,—l cannot take seriously John Forster’s suggestion that the passive resistance of people like Lord Russell has proved of more benefit to the world than all the prayers that have been offered. In spite of his learning tre is a poor leader for anyone. He does not want to be blown to pieces, neither do any of us, but I would rather risk that than submit to atheistic communism. In
my previous letter I was not referring to asking for God’s help, though we need that I was suggesting we should make reparation for atheist insults to our Father. We are God’s children and should love Him.—Yours, etc., G. F. SEWARD. September 19, 1961. Sir,—l have long admired the wisdom of Ralph. Wheeler’s letters, but I do, feel that his latest offering has glossed over some points. I believe the Russian people, a wartorn people, certainly do not want war. With all my heart, I too, long for peace. In New Zealand, people have protested against American, British and Soviet atom bomb tests. There seems to be no indication that the Russian people have protested against the atom bomb tests of their own Govern- 1 ment. Forty-odd years of Socialism seems to have taught them otherwise. I share Mr Wheeler’s dismay at man’s inhumanity to man but I also feel that New Zealand’s destiny lies with its own working class, not that of an unnamed foreign Power —Yours, etc., THOMAS. September 20, 1961. Sir, "Liberte Cherie’’ says of communism that >’’it has enslaved, slaughtered and tortured millions of people because they did not give up their will to be free.” History of the past ages is black with the sins of the “haves” against the “have-nots.” Peeping into recent capitalist history, we have torture and suffering caused by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Then we have the colonisation and the exploitation of the wealth of native countries. Africa is the latest fighting victim. Communism has evolved because of the past and present black history of our “free capitalist countries’ ” behaviour. Capitalist countries were the first to introduce - and use atomic weapons.—Yours, etc., SOCIAL EVOLUTION. September 20, 1961.
