Badminton B GRADE EVENTS AT CHAMPIONSHIPS
New ground was broken by the Canterbury Badminton Association at its annual championships last evening when B grade events were included on the programme for the first time. Ptey last night was confined to matches in this section and to veterans’ events.
A feature of the evening was the women's singles semi-final, between Mrs C. Atkinson, the top seed, and Mrs A. Tourell, a sister of the New Zealand representative. Mrs G. Middelberg Mrs Atkinson, one set up. was swept aside, 11-0, in the second set and Mrs Tourell appeared likely to gain a surprise win. But she continued to play a high game, which suited Mrs Atkinson very well. With smashes and fine placements she regained the upper hand and won the deciding set, 11-5. In the other semi-final. Miss C. Parris, seeded third, eliminate the second seed. Miss V. Tucker, after dropping the first set. The favourite for the men's single event. E. Ogier, came through the second round with a comfortable win against N. Greenslade. Earlier, Miss K. Williams reached the final of the A grade women’s singles championship with a convincing victory against Mrs M. Miller. Results were:— A Grade Women's Singles.—Semi-final: K. Williams beat M.
