CARLTON CORNER
Traffic Lights Next Year
The Carlton Mill corner will have traffic lights next year. The City Council last evening agreed that provision should be made on next year’s estimates for the lights. A spare controller which had been ordered and could be used for the intersection Would arrive from England late -in January. Other parts for the signal system would have to be ordered
Tn the meantime, a traffic officer will be on duty during peak periods to assist the movement of traffic. The best method of controlling traffic a.t the corner had been discussed at several meetings, and the benefits of a roundabout or traffic lights examined, the traffic committee reported. A plan for the laning of traffic and the installation of lights was submitted to the council in May Of last year. Subsequently, the committee had considered the priority that should be given to intersections, taking into account their accident record, capacity and geometric characteristics. On this basis, it was found that there were other intersections which should be considered ahead of the Carlton Mill corner, two in particular being Hospital corner and the Ferry road-Moorhouse avenue intersection. The council had then revoked its decision for the Carlton Mill corner and agreed that in the meantime islands and directional lines for the channelling of traffic be painted on the roadway.
When that was done a considerable imorovement in the movement of traffic had been noted, the committee said, but recently some hesitancy on the part of motorists had been observed, apparently because of doubt in the minds of drivers on their requirements for the righthand rule.
