ENGINEERING SCHOOL
Request For Completion (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON. Sept. 20. The Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) said in the House of Representatives today that the Government was considering requests for "very substantial extra expenditure” for the completion of the school of engineering of the University of Canterbury, including the landscaping of grounds. Mr Tennent added that, the university would be informed immediately a decision was made. Mr M. A. Connelly (Opposition, Riccarton) in an earlier question mentioned the nuisance of mud and dirt within the precincts of the new building. Mr Connelly asked if the additional expenditure was for increasing the total accommodation of the school. •Originally the school had been designed to accommodate 300 students, he said, but the increase had been such that it had been found necessary for certain sections to cater for as many as 700. The proposal was for the school to be designed to handle 700 students in each department. That called for an additional major lecture room, extra staff studies, extra library accommodation, extra common rooms for the students and staff, a major extension to the chemical engineering laboratory and some alterations to the civil, mechanical and electrical en. gineering laboratories.
