South Island Bulls Win Top Awards

DANNEVIRKE, Sept. 20. The national Aberdeen Angus run bull show at Dannevirke today was an allSouth Island affair. D. W J Gould (Christchurch) won the premier award of the day. the Guardian Trust Cup, for the best pen of four unled bulls, with L. Baigent (Nelson) second and A. Newman (Brightwater, Nelson) third. The Glenmark two-year-old bulls, all sired by the imported bulk Jasper Eric of Westdrums, were selected by the judges, Messrs W. T. Powdrell and R. Moare Renton, out of an entry of 212 bulls for the top award.
They said that the four bulls made up a particularly even pen with all the desired qualities of good run bulls They had never seen better at the Dannevirke show At auction the four winning bulls sold for 2420gns. giving an average of 605gns. which was well in advance of the 506gns average for the top pen last year. A Gisborne buyer, Mrs E Matthews, paid 750gns for Crib of Glenmark, the highest priced of the four. The others sold at 670gns, 550gns. and 450gns. Mr Gould was the most successful vendor of the day, with five bulls averaging 546gns The increased interest of southern breeders in the annual show and sale was noted by the president of the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association (Mr J P. Tylee) in presenting the Guardian Trust award. He said it was particularly significant that all the placed pens came from the South Island.
A feature of the sale was the new record price of llOOgns for a run bull paid by P. Nilsson, of Hastings, for Totaranui 292 offered by Totaranui Stud, Ltd. (Pahiatua). The previous record of 850gns was also passed again later when F. A. Elliott 'Blenheim) received 860gns for Bruee 2nd of Brackenfield from E. and H. Ensor (Blenheim). Bidding was keen for the top quality bulls, but average sorts were generally bA low last year’s prices and towards the end passings were frequent.
During the sale 167 unled bulls sold for 47.255gn5. averaging 283gns. compared with 172 at an average of 290gns last year. Over the two days. 224 led and unled bulls changed hands for 90,230<?n5, whereas last year 225 realised 97,747gn5.
