WAIMAIRI LIGHTS
City Asks For Payment
The Waimairi County Council will be invited by the City Council to settle its accounts of £10,649 Ils 3d for street lighting in the county. The county council recently declined liability for the charges.
In a report to the City Council last evening, Mr G. H. Battersby, general manager of the Municipal Electricity Department, said the account for the year 1961-62 was made up of interest; depreciation and maintenance items plus the power cost of £4370.
The City Solicitor (Mr W. R. Lascelles) gave an opinion that while the charge made for power must be the same in the county as in the city, this did not entitle Waimairi to any relief of its liabilities merely because the City Council had transferred funds from its electricity account for street lighting charges.
All councillors did not agree that electricity funds should be used for general purposes, but that did not alter the effect of the street lighting charge, said Cr. G. D. Hattaway. Cr. H. P. Smith said he would be happy to have county representatives meet the electricity committee so that the position could be explained.
