£500,000 Auckland Shopping Centre

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. Auckland department stores are combining to develop the first regional shopping centre in New Zealand at a cost of about £500,000. The directors of the firms announced tonight that agreement had been reached for the purchase of seven acres at New Lynn to develop a shopping centre. The land fronts the Great North road, near the existing New Lynn shopping area, and is owned by the Auckland Bus Company. A spokesman for the three companies said each of the three organisations would build large stores, of 15.000 square feet each, and provision would be made for about 14 other retailers. The centre would also have a large supermarket. All the stores would be

built around an enclosed shopping mall with parking on the surrounding areas for 500 cars. When completed in the summer of 1963, the centre is expected to serve a population of 40,000 within a radius of three miles. Over-all planning will be in the hands of one architect, So as to achieve harmony in appearance, but the individual stores will use their own architects for interior design.
