TOURS BY BUS

Authority Seeks Information (N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON. Sept 19 It would help him if someone in authority explained about why the Tourist Department did not promote bus tours from districts where a need was felt to exist, the No. 7 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr A. M. Murray) said in Masterton yesterday when he refused an application from Maxwell Motor Services for a tourist service to operate throughout the North Island from Masterton. The firm claimed that. a demand existed for the service. • 4 Mr R. W. Thompson, representing tlie Railways Department, which opposed the application, said his department was not permitted to promote tours. He diri not know why the Tourist Department did not do so, but he suggested it was a matter of not over-taxing accommodation. Two travel agency managers said their firms were either unable or not prepared to promote tours, but they Were sure the demand existed. Mr Murray said he had received a number of applications for tourist licences recently and he felt it was a matter of importance to transport operatons. He agreed that the reason for the Tourist Department not entering the field could be to avoid over-taxing accommodation at resorts catering for overseas tourists.
