Cricket IRELAND FAILS
Fast Scoring By Australia (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) DUBLIN. Sept, 19 Ireland made only 76 in reply to Australia's first innings score of 291 at Dublin today, but the Australian caption, R. Benaud, did not force the follow-on, to the delight of the Irish crowd, Benaud has turned these final, second-class games of the tour into tremendous pop-ularity-builders for the side, which is being hailed as the finest ever to visit Britain. After the Australian openers had gone cheaply, A. K Davidson hit 46 in even time. The crowd flocked to the ground in the afternoon as B. C. Booth took over the role of aggressor and made the top score, 79, in even time. A. W. Grout carried on and made 33 in 15 minutes, while P. J. Burge added 60.
The crowd waited to see whether Benaud would make Ireland bat again, which would virtually kill the match, but he .did not and R. B. Simpson and W Lowry were applauded as they came out to open. The Australians' second innings continued until stumps even though the light was appalling. Scores:— AUSTRALIA First Innings W. Lawry. c and b O’Riordan .. .. 9 R. B.
