Badminton SOME UPSETS IN ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY
Results of singles matches were as expected, but there were some upsets in the doubles when the Canterbury Badminton Association's annual A grade championships were continued last evening. Further progress was also made in the novice events. Two Canterbury division I players of 1961, D. Forbes and J .McShane, were eliminated in the first round of the men's singles in minor upsets. Forbes was beaten by B. Crofts (Knox) in a threegame match, with Crofts full of energy in the last game. McShane's conqueror was T. Harneiss, who plays in the Canterbury club’s B grade team.
Harneiss, a left-hander who was in the provincial division 111 side this year returned too many shots for McShane. In the following round Harneiss had an interesting match with the fourthseeded B. Wylie. He held Wylie to 10-all in the first game before the seeded player varied his game to good effect. Harneiss served poorly, and was too slow to recover Wylie’s well-timed drop-shots on return qf service.
R. Macefield, the men’s singles title-holder, showed in his defeat of M. Berkley that he will be very hard to beat again this year. Although he has not played in the interprovincial matches, and has missed some club matches, he appears to be the best of the field. Two seeded pairs failed to survive their first-round matches in the men's doubles. J. Read and R. Hall had to bow to the placement and control of the veteran Knox pair. R. Pattinson and A. Roberts, but the defeat of S. Clarke and P. Boatwood by M. Ford and L Mangos was more of a surprise. Ford and Mangos won this match at 15-12 in the third game. The same pair had a close call in the first round against the Lincoln College B grade pair, K. Drew and Ho Koh Yen. The very tall Drew smashed well and was well supported by the Malayan Ho. Ford and
Mangos had to call upon all their powers of recovery to win at 14-18, 15-12, 17-14. Players in the novice grade matches have shown a surprisingly good standard considering that they are all In their first year at the game. In the men's events the most impressive have been R. Hampton and J. Dando. Among the women Mrs M. McGifford, of the Burnham club, looks most promising She is a Malayan who had not played the game before coming to New Zealand. Results were:— A Grade
