WATERFRONT SHIFT WORK

Application Bv Employers (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. The possibility of introducing shift work on the New Zealand waterfront, suggested in Bluff on Saturday by the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) will be tested shortly. The Port Employers’ Association has already filed papers for conciliation on the matter in respect of the port at Mount Maunganui. The application is expected to be opposed by the Waterside Workers’ Association. If the matter becomes deadlocked it is almost certain to go before the Waterfront Industry Tribunal for decision. In the case of Mount Maunganui the employers* attitude is likely to be based on the fact that much of the work in the port comes from the paper mills. These operate on shift work and their storage is the waterfront.
