STATE HOUSE RENTS
Pensioners’ Position (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. State house rent concessions to age and other beneficiaries would apply as previously announced, said the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae), replying to a question by Mr M Moohan (Opposition, Petone) in the House of Representatives today. Mr Rae said assessment notices had been sent out at the end of August to give tenants concerned the necessary notice of increases to take effect next month. Under normal conditions the rent folder (the State tenant’s rent book) would have gone out with the notices, but this had not been possible because of the volume of work. The folders were only just reaching the tenants concerned.
Meantime they had been applying in the usual way for concessions in respect of the new rents, and each would be individually informed, he said. Some had regarded the assessment notices as a final decision, but that was not the case, said Mr Rae. The Government would adhere to the assurances given in the first place in respect of pensioners and other types of beneficiaries.
