TEACHERS’ PAY

“Increases Not Likely” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Sept. 19. The country’s present economic situation made it unlikely that there would be a general increase in commencing salaries for teachers, the Minister of Education (Mr (Tennent) said in a letter to the Wellington Education Board today. • The board had written to the Minister stating that salary increases could be a solution to the teacher shortage.

Mr W. Matthew, a board member, said an estimated 2640 teachefs left the service each year. In the last six months 132 teachers had left the employ of the Wellington board. He thought something should be done for this group of lower-paid new teachers.

The basic rate for a new male teacher was £640. said Mr J. McDonald. The board should concentrate on raising this basic standard. It took a teacher five years to reach £9oo—the starting* figure for a constable. It was decided that a deputation from the board should wait on the Minister.
