THREE FLOODS IN MANAWATU

Catchment Engineer Reports To Board (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, September 19. “We have had a real thrashing with three floods in only five weeks,” said Mr P. G. Evans, engineer to the Manawatu Catchment Board, at the monthly meeting of the board today. The estimated damage after the first flood had been between £5OOO and £6OOO, and the damage caused by the second flood had lifted the total to £16.000, said Mr Evans. The storm last week-end was of a type not experienced before by Mr . Evans. Rain fell on both sides of the Manawatu gorge and close in to the ranges. The river gauge at Dannevirke usually gives 12 hours’ warning that flood waters are on their, way. On this occasion the water from the Palmerston North side of the gorge arrived sooner. It was estimated that the floodwater would reach its peak at midnight, but instead it came at 9 p.m. Men were taken from the board’s scheme work and diverted to flood work. Mr Evans said the scheme work had not suffered but would be delayed probably by a month or two.
