RATES AHEAD OF SEWERS

Areas Charged

For Loans

“Is it right and proper that people are getting stung £8 a year for sewerage they have not got?” asked Mr A. J. Smith at the Christchurch Drainage Board’s meeting last evening. “A simple answer is that you voted for it.” said the chairman (Mr F. R. Price). Mr Smith said he had had a protest “in lurid terms” by people who were not on the sewer but had to pay rates to the board.

The secretary (Mr T. A. Tucker) explained that the board had decided that from April 1, four areas—Avondale, Blenheim road, Bexley and Yaldhurst—should be brought into the rating area and charged for loans. The areas were the next four to be reticulated, and ahead of the actual servicing the board had to spend a considerable amount in the areas.
