Couple’s Reason For Leaving (N.Z. Press Association) VUCKLAND, Sept. 19. A South African woman who arrived in Auckland in the Dominion Monarch today said she and her husband intended settling in New Zealand because of the colour bar and racial discriminatin in her own country. She is Mrs Alec Pollock, of Johannesburg. Wif, her husband and two children. Neil, aged three, and Lesley, aged 26 months, she will live in Christchurch

Mr Pollock is a Scotsman, who has been in South Africa for five years. He is a joiner by tride. Numerous South African families joined the Dominion Monarch at Cape Town with the intention of settling in Australia or New Zealand. “I think most of them are getting out before things get too hot” said Mrs Pollock.

Other South Africans in the ship denied that the political situation had anything to do with their leaving. Mr and Mrs W. H. Angus, of Pietermaritzburg, said they were settling in New Zealand because they were attracted by what they had heard of the country. They will settle ip Tokoroa with their three children.

A farm-manager in South Africa, Mr Angus has secured employment here as an accountant.
