SHIPWRECK MEDAL

Timaru Man’s Find

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, Sept. 19. A beautiful silver medal dated 1824, and presented on December 17, 1840, to a Lieutenant Geo. Davies, Royal Navy, has come into the possession of Mr J. H. Chambers, of 48 Evans street. Timaru. Mr Chambers, a Post Office mechanician, found the medal down the side of an upholstered armchair, the previous owner of which did not bear the name es. The medal is inscribed: “Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck.’’ It also bears the profile of George IV, who was patron of the institution. The name of Lieutenant Davies is inscribed on the edge of the medal, with the words: “Voted Dec. 17. 1840 ” The words, "W. Wyon, Mint,” also appear on both sides of the medal. "Let Not The Deep" The lettering, “Let not the deep swallow me up,” is inscribed on one side, surrounding a dramatic raised relief of three men in a whaler. One man is rowing, a second is holding an oar. suggesting steadying of the boat, while a third is dragging a man from the sea. The scene is vivid with meticulous detail.

Mr Chambers hopes that some reader of “The Press” may be able to throw light on the identity ,of the recipient of the 'tnedaL the manner of its presentation, information as to the origin of the institution, and details relevant to the shipwreck.
