S.I. MAORI RUGBY
Southland Beats Canterbury IN.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 18. The Ratana Cup. the symbol of South Island Maori Rugby supremacy, was won on Saturday by Southland Maoris, who beat Canterbury Maoris, 24-14, at Rugby Park, Invercargill. The match, played before a small crowd, had its bright moments, but was marred by poor handling and tackling on both sides. The loose play of the forwards, combined with the fumbling of the inside backs, made much of the play scrappy. Scorers for Southland were R. Walker (two penalty goals, one try, three conversions), D. Tini (try). R. McDonald (try), W. Te Koeti (try). For Canterbury, R. Wainohu scored two tries, one of which was converted by S Pei, and H. Stuart and D Couch scored tries.
